Building regulatory con昀椀dence
For the NRI, these developments reinforce
the role of technical engagement across
the sector.
As new reactor technologies progress
towards deployment, our role extends beyond
providing insurance capacity. Our engineering,
legal and underwriting teams work with
developers, operators, and international and
domestic regulators to understand how new
technologies and regulation changes influence
project risk. That technical understanding
helps us assess emerging risks while
supporting the wider development of
the market.
We are actively contributing to wider
discussions on how liability frameworks,
international conventions and regulatory
developments can support investment and
cross-border cooperation. As more countries
pursue nuclear programmes, consistency
and mutual understanding become
increasingly important.
A stronger framework
for growth
Ultimately, the success of the Fingleton Review
will be measured by whether it helps create
a regulatory system that remains trusted,
proportionate and capable of supporting the
next generation of nuclear projects.
If, in five years’ time, the Review has helped
bring new projects to FID more quickly, given
investors greater confidence in the UK and
upheld the UK’s reputation for high safety
standards, it will have achieved exactly what it
set out to do.
That would represent an important step
towards a regulatory framework that supports
growth while maintaining the standards
that have long been one of the UK’s greatest
strengths.
