NRI Annual Review 2026 - Flipbook - Page 19

Fusion energy is moving from
the laboratory to commercially
relevant projects, with countries
including China, France, Germany,
Japan, United Kingdom and
United States of America at the
forefront. As developers scaleup, comprehensive insurance
becomes a cornerstone for
investors, regulators, shareholders
and long-term operations. NRI
has been supporting fusion
projects for years and is set to
partner with the sector as it
commercialises.
“Nuclear” is in our name and our DNA, but NRI does not
treat fusion like fission. We underwrite on the facts: based
on the engineering design, safety case, operating envelope
and maturity of each project. Our team of specialist
engineers and underwriters has assessed fusion facilities
from early R&D through prototype operations, applying the
same rigorous, technical approach that has made NRI a
trusted insurer across the civil nuclear sector since 1956.
This year, we are marking the launch of Fusion Energy
Insurers (FEI), a subsidiary of the NRI that continues our
long-standing expertise or nuclear technologies and risk
while also recognising the need for fusion to have its own
direct approach to risk.
Working through the international nuclear insurance
pooling system gives NRI access to deep technical
knowledge for complex risks, enabling tailored cover from
construction through to operation, where we also have the
benefit of scalable capacity through inter-pool reciprocation.
