A Conversation with New Board
Member Melanie Raven
Q: As a new board member, what
are your initial impressions of NRI?
A. Joining NRI has been a delightful
experience so far. The team is incredibly
passionate and knowledgeable, which
is evident in every interaction. I’ve
been impressed by the openness
and transparency with which the
organisation is run, as well as the
commitment to deliver on client
service. It’s clear that NRI is dedicated
to effective risk management, safety
and delivering exceptional value to
its clients who are always at the core
of their decision making.
Q: How does your role at Ark
complement your position on
the NRI board?
A. Ark is a Specialty Lines insurer,
handling many complex risk classes
including Energy and Heavy Industry
Property. This has provided me with
insights into best practices, challenges
that clients face as well as market
trends, all of which I believe will be
beneficial to NRI.
Q: With your extensive experience
in the energy market, what unique
perspectives do you bring to NRI?
A. Energy markets constantly
evolve, and face many challenges
and emerging risks along the way,
including cyber threats and more
recently geopolitical unrest. In my
opinion, in an everchanging world, we
need to demonstrate agility, be clear
on the product that we are selling to
avoid ambiguity and price for those
risks accordingly. As the world pivots
towards sustainable energy sources,
nuclear, I believe, will play a big part in
that transition. NRI will therefore have
a crucial role to play. That’s what really
drew me to the opportunity to join NRI

Q: As chair of IUMI’s Offshore Energy
Committee, how do you see the
intersection of maritime insurance
and nuclear risk management?
A. There’s a lot of excitement about
nuclear in the maritime industry.
I see significant opportunities for
collaboration between IUMI, NRI,
and the Nuclear Pools. By leveraging
our global network, we can lobby for
policy change and support the safe
integration of nuclear technology
in maritime shipping.
Q: What are your thoughts on the
developments in civil maritime
nuclear reactor shipping?
A. The advancements in nuclearpowered vessels are impressive,
and there’s potential to make this
technology more accessible to the
broader maritime sector. Increased
defence spending and continued
investments in nuclear submarines
are positive for the industry. However,
collaboration is key to overcoming
challenges, including winning public
confidence and support.
Q: What are your key goals as a new
board member of NRI?
A. NRI is already a leading authority
in nuclear insurance and risk
management, and continued
recognition in this space is critical.
I aim to advocate for best practices
and lead in collaboration, while also
fostering public confidence in nuclear
energy. By developing innovative
products and maintaining a proactive
approach, I believe NRI can shape the
future of the sector.
