3. Deepen the workforce pool
To fill the skills gap, we need to increase
employment opportunities. By delivering
interventions to upskill workers and facilitate
mid-career switches, nuclear has an
opportunity to tackle this head on. As well,
by doubling the number of apprentices and
graduates entering the workforce by the
academic year 2025/2026 and quadrupling
the number of specialist science and nuclear
fission PhDs, we can ensure we have the
range of skilled workers required to meet
future demand.
4. Lead and steward for the long term
We must create opportunities for skilled
workers to grow their experience, collaborate
across the sector, and nurture the senior
leaders of the future. As we think about what
the future of the sector looks like, it’s vital to
improve the diversity and inclusion of our
future workforce and reshape the way
people view the sector.
The nuclear sector is at a moment of
monumental change. Recognising there are
no quick fixes, we need to commit to tackling
the skills gap by creating solutions and
opportunities to attract and retain our future
nuclear workforce. Through collaboration
and commitment to this ambition, we can
help the next generation realise the exciting
opportunities that our industry has to offer.
